Hikers' bodies recovered from B.C.'s Shannon Falls

A rescuer scales the mountain face in Shannon Falls Provincial Park to search for the three missing people

The BBC reports that Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh and Megan Scraper were swimming at the top of Shannon Falls in British Columbia on Tuesday when they slipped into a pool 30m (98ft) below. Friends and social media posts identified Alexey Lyakh and Megan Scraper as the others killed.

Witnesses told Search and Rescue officials that Gamble and Lyakh followed Scraper into the pools to try and help her.

The social media stars had traveled around Canada, the US, Europe, India, Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Brazil. "Your bright personality will be greatly missed", one person wrote on Facebook.

Sascha Banks from Squamish RCMP said crews are still working to recover the bodies from the water.

"Her boyfriend and then another friend attempted to save her", Willcox said, adding friends of the victims reported seeing them carried over the lip of one pool and into a second.

"The RCMP and Squamish SAR have transitioned to a recovery of the bodies from the pool but the terrain is extremely hard, very unsafe, and the water flow will be heavy with the warm temperatures today, increasing the risk to those in the recovery effort", said Banks in a statement shared Wednesday. A Mountie says they "were walking along the edge of where the pool would be and at that stage they slipped and fell".

From that intersection, there is a narrow and completely submerged passage that requires rescue teams to dive to get through. The Australians on the ground "remain closely engaged in efforts to support and sustain the group, as well as in planning".

"Specialized RCMP and SAR teams are already on site this morning".

In 2016, Gamble, Lyakh and another group member, Justis Price Brown, were fined and jailed for a week after their out-of-bounds hike to a hot spring in Yellowstone National Park in the US.

"Unless you have knowledge and the right equipment you should not be up there", she said. "Fortunately in the past they have been able to be rescued", Willcox said.

"Until the joint operation is completed Shannon Falls and any trails leading to the pool system at the top of Shannon Falls are closed to the public".

In recent years, he also worked as an instructor in a business that aims to teach people how to build a popular account on Instagram.

Squamish Search and Rescue spokesman John Willcox said a young woman was swept into one of the pools about noon Tuesday. "And with more volume comes more responses".
