Depression off NC coast expected to become tropical storm; Beryl weakens

New predictions for hurricanes, storms in the Caribbean this season

The second tropical depression of this year's hurricane season has formed over the central Atlantic, CBS Miami reports. Maximum sustained winds were down to 60 miles per hour and it was moving west-northwest at 16 miles per hour.

At 5 p.m., the center of Tropical Storm Beryl was located near latitude 12.7 North, longitude 52.7 West. Beryl is moving faster toward the west-northwest near 17 miles per hour.

The system is forecasted to degenerate into an open trough east of the Lesser Antilles over the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are estimated to be near 50 miles per hour with higher gusts. If it persists with a closed circulation of low pressure, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) may initiate advisories on Tropical Depression Two at any time.

HOW THE SYSTEM MAY AFFECT SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA: Tropical Depression Three presents no direct threats to Southeastern North Carolina, nor the United States. The storm is still expected to dissipate rapidly by Monday or Tuesday, however, we'll be monitoring the storm over the next 5 days.

Hurricane Beryl, a compact storm almost 2,000 miles from North Carolina, is not expected to have any impact on the Southeast coast.

Vacationers: Tropical storm could develop off Carolina coast
On Friday morning, the hurricane was about 1,140 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles where the BVI is located. The National Hurricane Center believes that some additional intensification is possible today.

Tropical Storm Beryl has formed between West Africa and the Lesser Antilles.

The Weather Channel warned the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean should "watch out" as Tropical Invest 95L could cause a lot of damage this weekend. It appears, based on the current track, the storm will skirt just south of Puerto Rico, portions of which remain in the dark nine months after Hurricane Maria.

In 2017, there were 17 named tropical storms including 10 hurricanes, of which six were major hurricanes.

No watches or warnings for that storm have been issued. Cooler sea surface temperatures and strong trade winds created across the Atlantic Basin by the Pacific warm-water phenomena known as El Niño inhibit the growth of storms.

New predictions from Colorado State University suggest for a total of 11 named storms will develop this season, a drop from the original prediction of 14.
