Home sweet home for Lewis Hamilton with pole at Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton

Sirotkin managed to limp out of the gravel, but could manage only the slowest time with both Williams cars to start at the back.

"The situation is hard to judge", said Vettel , "because we haven't seen much today and mostly collected data, and also because time is limited between the two sessions".

He now shares the record of five British wins with late compatriot Jim Clark and France's four-times champion Alain Prost.

Speaking to Martin Brundle in the moments after edging out Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen by less than 0.01s, Lewis Hamilton was clearly seen to be shaking with emotion, nearly overcome by the moment.

"These guys really pulled something special out, heading into Q3", he continued, referring to the Ferrari pair.

Vettel's response came up short - albeit just 0.106s down on the new benchmark - and afterwards joked "it's so little time, it's practically the same lap!"

"We're (England) fighting for the World Cup so it's just a great time I think for sport".

Russian Federation loses to Croatia, and Twitter users Putin their best jokes
RTÉ soccer analyst Didi Hamann believes that England have the slight edge over Croatia going into their World Cup semi-final. It seemed Croatia were cruising to the semis, but Fernandes ensured it were shootouts that decided the course of the game.

Track position seems doubly significant at Silverstone, where Hamilton is looking to claim a fifth consecutive win at his home race - and sixth overall.

"I think the lap was going well until the last two corners", said Bottas. "Our downforce level, I think, has been good but you see how close it is between us". Without you, I wouldn't have been able to do it'.

"Because you know that he's going to improve again, so I've got to improve the same and a bit more".

Expanding on the issue, Vettel said: "I don't know what happened but it went a little bit stiff".

With the Ferraris qualifying less than a tenth behind Hamilton and conditions expected to be even warmer than experienced in qualifying, the reigning champion believes Sunday's race will be one of the toughest he's faced.

While not as good as he'd hoped for, the grid position still puts Bottas in with a good chance of a podium in Sunday's race. This has been a strong circuit for me for years, as you can see and my job is try to make the difference.

With the forecast predicting one of the hottest British Grands Prix in recent memory, managing tyre degradation is going to be key to strategy at SIlverstone.
