North Korea slams ‘cancerous’ United States demands after nuclear talks with Mike Pompeo

Pompeo is greeted by North Korean Director of the United Front Department Kim Yong Chol and North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho as he arrives at Sunan International Airport in Pyongyang

It marked his first time visiting North Korea since President TrumpDonald John TrumpWhat to know about Trump's Supreme Court pick so far Bookstore owner calls police after customer confronted Steve Bannon McConnell pushing Trump toward 2 potential Supreme Court picks: report MORE held a summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore last month. "But through the high-level talks, the trust between the DPRK and the United States is facing a risky situation where our resolve for denuclearization, which has been firm and steadfast, may falter".

The secretary said: "I think we made progress in every element of our discussions", according to the report.

Nauert on Saturday told reporters that Pompeo did not meet Kim during this visit to North Korea but also that they had not expected him to.

Trump has vowed that North Korea will not be allowed to threaten the United States with its ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons.

Kim Yong-chol joked that Mr Pompeo may not have slept well during his overnight stay at a guesthouse in Pyongyang. The spokesman also downplayed the significance of the USA suspending its military exercises with South Korea, saying the North had made a larger concession by blowing up the tunnels at its nuclear test site.

Pompeo headed to Pyonyang on Friday for the third time this year, "seeking to fill in some details on those commitments and continue the momentum toward implementation of what the two leaders promised each other and the world", he said in a statement.

On the North Korean side, deputy director general for North American affairs at the DPRK foreign ministry Choe Kang Il and Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui, among others, accompanied Kim Yong Chol.

It said the measures the US had taken, . such as the suspension of joint military exercises are reversible, . and can not be compared to Pyongyang exploding and shutting down nuclear and missile test sites.

"These are complicated issues, but we made progress on nearly all of the central issues", Pompeo said before boarding a plane to depart North Korea, according to a pool report.

Pompeo, who was on his third visit to Pyongyang, began the outreach when he was still Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director and remained the pointman on negotiations after the process became public and he became secretary of state.

He spoke after meeting Kim Yong-chol, widely seen as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's right-hand man.

"The more we meet, the deeper our friendship will be, I hope", he said, adding: "Today's meeting is a really meaningful meeting". "Our policy toward North Korea has not changed, we're committed to a denuclearized North Korea".

Pompeo said they made progress on what the modalities would look like for the destruction of that facility.

Developments between North Korea and the United States will be closely watched in the region.

North Korea has called high-level talks with a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "extremely regrettable", contradicting Washington's account of how the meeting in Pyongyang went.

"We talked about what the North Koreans are continuing to do and how it's the case that we can get our arms around achieving what Chairman Kim and President Trump both agreed to", Pompeo said.

And, just hours after Pompeo arrived in Tokyo from Pyongyang on Saturday, the North blasted the talks, saying they had been "regrettable".

"There is still much work to do to establish what the precise timeline of the various events will be", Pompeo said in Tokyo.

Officials from the two sides would meet next week in Panmunjom, on the border between the two Koreas, to discuss the return of the remains of the some 7,000 USA soldiers still listed as missing in action since the 1950-53 Korean War.

Amid increasing scrutiny of North Korea's commitment to giving up its weapons, Pompeo came to Pyongyang in a bid to hammer out the details of a denuclearization plan.
