Statue of Liberty Climber Speaks Out Against Trump Immigration Policy

Woman Climbing the Statue of Liberty on July 4th: ‘No Connection’ to Rise & Resist Protest

Okoumou, a US citizen who immigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1994, pled not guilty to charges of misdemeanor trespassing, interference with government agency functions and disorderly conduct, according to CBS.

A Fourth of July protester who scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty in what prosecutors call a "dangerous stunt" will face a judge in NY.

Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey Berman accused Okoumou of staging "a risky stunt that alarmed the public and endangered her own life" and those of police.

Visitors were evacuated from Liberty Island via tour boats, as two Emergency Services Unit officers climbed a ladder to the statue's base, hoping to reason with the woman.

Defiant at first, she told the authorities who climbed the Statue of Liberty to come to get her that she wasn't coming down till "all the children are released".

Okoumou, who emigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1994, highlighted her opposition to the Trump administration and its immigration policies.

Therese Okoumou, 44, pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges for the stunt on July 4th.

The many problems with Trump's reported idea of invading Venezuela
Donald Trump reportedly wanted to address the crisis by mounting a U.S. invasion and deposing President Nicolas Maduro. Donald Trump asked senior aides about the possibility of invading Venezuela, according to an official.

Earlier on America's Independence Day, a group was arrested for unfurling a banner reading, "Abolish I.C.E.", reported NBC New York.

The love fest continued outside as Okoumou quoted former first lady Michelle Obama while wearing a T-shirt that read: "White Supremacy is Terrorism".

She continued: "Trump has wrecked this country apart". You see that guys that went up there. After a three hour standoff, police officers cornered the woman and helped her down, then took her into custody. "I would've said 'let's get some nets, and let's wait until she comes down".

NYPD Detective Brian Glacken told reporters the woman told them she was protesting the situation of "the children in Texas".

After Okoumou's arrest, Rise and Resist distanced itself from her actions.

She was apprehended around 6:30 p.m. after spending about 3 hours at the base of the statue in protest of immigrants and the deeply troubling separation policy which has kept thousands of children detained away from their parents.

If convicted, Okoumou could face up to six months behind bars on each count. "The facade of the monument there is a granite rock-like surface that the average person wouldn't be able to scale", said National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis. Average attendance for the Fourth of July is 20,000 to 25,000 people, he added.
