Ant-Man And The Wasp US box office down on expectations

"'Ant-Man and the Wasp' proves that at this point Marvel can seemingly do no wrong", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore (SCOR). The weekend's other new wide release was Blumhouse Productions' "The First Purge", the fourth film in the low-budget horror franchise about an annual 12-hour period of lawlessness.

Hence why Ant-Man and the Wasp opening less like a box office event is slightly underwhelming, especially given that this was the superhero movie that was supposed to most get a boost from post-Avengers hype.

Disney and Marvel seem to be on a role at the box office. The blockbusters earned US$29 million and US$28.6 million respectively this weekend. Still, Ant-Man and the Wasp looks to be off to a good start as the film is pacing 45 percent ahead of its predecessor intentionally, taking in $85 million overseas, with a fair amount of global markets yet to open.

And if you are among those who saw Ant-Man And The Wasp this weekend and loved it, we have a recommendation for you. The film is on track to earn over $82 million, which as Deadline reports, is over 40% more than the original earned its opening weekend. The studio has had a string of box office hits in 2018 with Avengers: Infinity War racking up over US$2 billion and counting, and Black Panther passing US$1.3 billion globally. Solo made just under $1 million domestically, bringing its domestic box office total to $211 million. In three weeks, the dinosaur tentpole has earned US$333.3 million in North America. Everyone's favorite crime-fighting family has crossed the $500 million mark domestically and $700 million worldwide. Overseas, Incredibles 2 made $61 million, bringing its worldwide box office total to $268 million.

Solo: A Star Wars Story fell from number nine to number fourteen at the USA box office.

Also in the top five is Sony's "Sicario: Day of the Soldado". With $12.4 million in five weeks, it's the year's top documentary at the box office, edging out the Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc "RBG". The Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin-led sequel picked up another $7.6 million, taking the domestic tally to $35 million.

Also opening in limited release was Annapurna's "Sorry to Bother You", which landed the best per screen average of the weekend with $44,881. Lakeith Stanfield, Armie Hammer, Tessa Thompson, Steven Yeun, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, David Cross, Patton Oswalt, and Omari Hardwick round out the cast.

"Incredibles 2" opened in France with $9.9 million, marking the second highest opening for a Pixar release behind "Finding Nemo".

Avengers: Infinity War dropped from twelfth place to fifteen place at the USA box office.
