Manafort's lawyers ask for trial to be moved away from DC

CBSThisMorning YouTube

Since Manafort was sent to jail last month pending his trials, Trump has tried to distance himself from his former campaign head, saying he had "nothing" to with his White House bid. Manafort's lawyers also argued that the witness-tampering charges that landed him in jail are not so bad because they did not include threats of physical violence.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose office is prosecuting Manafort on charges ranging from tax evasion and bank fraud to the ominous-sounding 'conspiracy against the United States, ' told an appeals court panel on Thursday that it comes with the territory of being accused of committing felonies.

Manafort also requested that the court use a jury questionnaire, that potential jurors face a preliminary questioning about Manafort, and a "substantial increase" in the number of potential jurors summoned for the trial.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort departs from U.S. District Court in Washington, DC, U.S., February 28, 2018.

While the senior executive is unnamed in this filing, in a previous court filing prosecutors identified Lender D as The Federal Savings Bank.

Pompeo seeks clarity in denuclearization talks with NKorea
He simply said that a good deal of time was devoted to discussing that and the declaration of Pyongyang's nuclear and missile facilities.

Manafort, according to his lawyer, is being secluded because correctional officials "cannot otherwise guarantee his safety". Last month the judge overseeing the Alexandria case rejected a motion to dismiss the indictment, affirming Mueller's mandate to prosecute him.

Lawyers for Paul Manafort are seeking to delay one of his criminal trials and move the location away from Washington, where they say the bias against their client is so great that a fair trial would be "impossible", according to court documents filed in federal court Friday.

"Trump and his team have become increasingly frustrated with how long Mueller's probe is taking to complete, and Trump in particular has taken a more aggressive stance toward Mueller since the Department of Justice criticized the FBI's actions in 2016 in relation to the Hillary Clinton email probe", Fox News noted. Three others - George Papadopoulos, Michael Flynn and Rick Gates - had pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Manafort has reportedly been locked away in the "VIP" section of Virginia's Northern Neck Regional Jail since he arrived on June 15.

Manafort's lawyer Kevin Downing said Manafort is being held for 23 hours a day because "the facility can not otherwise guarantee his safety" and complained he can not adequately prepare for his upcoming trial, which is slated for July 25.
