North Korea calls denuclearisation talks with US 'regrettable'

North Korea has said that high-level talks with a USA delegation led by Mike Pompeo were regrettable and accused Washington of trying to unilaterally pressurise the country into abandoning its nuclear weapons.

After the meeting, North Korean officials said their talks with Pompeo had been "regrettable" and said Pompeo made "one-sided and robber-like" demands regarding denuclearization.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrives in Japan after wrapping up two days of talks with senior officials in North Korea.

Donald Trump on Monday raised concerns that Beijing may be seeking to derail efforts aimed at denuclearizing North Korea, but added that he was confident that Pyongyang leader Kim Jong Un will uphold his pact with the USA president.

At the same time the U.S. state department was forced to deny reports Mr Pompeo gave Kim Jong Un a CD of Elton John's Rocket Man - a playful reference to Donald Trump's nickname for the North Korean leader.

Trump has already faced criticism for being too quick to make security concessions to Kim, including his unilateral suspension of military exercises with South Korea.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha said North Korea had balked at a written pledge for "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation" for historical reasons but stressed that the goal remained the same whether that exact phrase was used.

"The miracle could be your miracle", Pompeo said of North Korea and its leader.

"And so if those requests were gangster-like, they are - the world is a gangster, because there was a unanimous decision at the U.N. Security Council about what needs to be achieved", he added.

Those include the formation of a working group to determine exactly how North Korea's denuclearisation will be verified and a Thursday meeting with Pentagon officials to discuss the return of remains of American soldiers killed during the Korean War.

A USA official confirmed that the destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold were the two ships that transited through the waterway. The last American warship to transit through the Strait was the USS John S.

Pompeo met with senior Vietnamese officials, including the prime minister and foreign minister in Hanoi, after weekend stops in Japan and North Korea, where he has been seeking progress in denuclearization negotiations with the North.

Leaked US intelligence findings have concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear programme completely.

He added: "When we spoke to them about denuclearisation, they did not push back".

Kim later said that "there are things that I have to clarify", to which Pompeo responded that "there are things that I have to clarify as well".

Despite the expectations, the remains were not returned and Pompeo was not granted a meeting with Kim. "The choice now lies with North Korea and its people". It wasn't my language, it was the language of Chairman Kim, he committed to complete denuclearisation.

"So if were President Trump I would not let China use North Korea to back me off of the trade dispute". "But Washington should not allow nuclear talks to be held hostage to peace talks or else there could be peace with a nuclear-armed North Korea indefinitely".

A letter from Kim to Trump was also delivered to Pompeo through Kim Yong-chol, a top North Korean party official.

He said the key to Vietnam's rise was post-Vietnam War engagement with the United States, which began in 1985, when the countries started working together to repatriate remains of USA service members lost in Vietnam.

Officials from the two sides would meet next week in Panmunjom, on the border between the two Koreas, to discuss the return of the remains of roughly 7,000 U.S. soldiers missing since the 1950-1953 Korean War.
