Taiwan name-change by Air India unrelated to one China policy

Two U.S. Navy ships passed through the Taiwan Strait Saturday

The Global Times said in an editorial that the USA was adding to tensions by sailing the Japan-based guided missile destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold through the 160-kilometer-wide (100-mile-wide) strait that divides Taiwan from mainland China. In 2007, a US aircraft carrier sailed through the strait on its way to home port in Japan, a route Washington described then as a safety move due to weather.

Earlier on Saturday, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said the ships were moving in a northeastern direction, adding that the situation was in accordance with regulations.

An Indian official source on July 7 told Indian media that the name change made by Air India about Taiwan did not relate to the "One China" policy and that it was in alignment with global practices, reported the Times of India.

"U.S. Navy Ships transit between the South China Sea and East China Sea via the Taiwan Strait and have done so for many years", Brown said.

The U.S. Congress recently passed a measure encouraging higher-level government contacts with Taiwan and closer cooperation with their military.

A USA official confirmed that the destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold were the two ships that transited through the waterway.

In the MAC's statement made in response to Liu, it said that it is self-evident which the two sides of the strait is responsible for the disruptions to the status quo.

China sees self-ruling democratic Taiwan as part of its territory to be reunified, but the island sees itself as a sovereign country.

The communist government in Beijing considers Taiwan a renegade province that must be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary.

The last American warship to transit through the Strait was the USS John S. McCain in July, 2017.

China has alarmed Taiwan by ramping up military exercises this year, including flying bombers and other military aircraft around the island and sending its carrier through the narrow Taiwan Strait separating it from Taiwan.

Despite the lack of diplomatic relations, the USA remains Taiwan's chief worldwide ally and American law requires the government to respond to threats to the island.

Such developments come amid rising frictions over what the US considers unfair trading practices by China, the world's second-largest economy.
