Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the two biggest names in golf, are reportedly planning a one-on-one match that will see the victor walk away with $10 million.
"Nobody respects and appreciates what he's done for the game more because nobody's benefited from what he's done for the game of golf more than I have, " Mickelson said of Woods at the Masters.
Now there's reportedly a good chance that we could be treated to a match play event where those two players could sort out their rivalry face-to-face.
"We're working on a different date", the 48-year-old Mickelson was reported to have said Thursday. I think there would be a lot of interest in it if we just went straight to the final round. In what would have been a prime-time special, the two biggest names in modern golf would have played for a $10 million prize but the logistics, including a major network and corporate sponsors, didn't quite come together.
"It's a ridiculous amount of money", Mickelson told Golf.com. Coming to a TV near you. soon. Mickelson even suggested that this could be the beginning of a tour where he faces Woods in multiple one-on-one exhibitions each year. Mickelson finished in first place just four months ago at the WGC-Mexico Championship and has six top-10 finishes this year. Mickelson was never the dominant figure that Palmer was, but when the younger Woods exploded on the scene, neither one shied away from the competition.
Federer brings back the SABR at Wimbledon
Defending champion Federer faces French 22nd seed Adrian Mannarino while two-time champion Nadal plays Jiri Vesely. Pliskova avoided the cull by beating Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 later in the afternoon.
The duo have been rivals for much of their careers, with Mickelson a long-time number two to Woods' domination as world No. 1.
It's a heavyweight bout to take two of the golf's biggest stars out of their comfort zone in an unorthodox way that could reshape American golf as we know it.
Mickelson knows, however, that Woods has bragging rights in nearly every category in golf history, his 14 major titles and 79 career US PGA triumphs each second on the all-time lists.
The two best-golfing legends of our generation could hit the course to play a mano a mano winner-take-all match.
"Whether it's 14 majors, 79 wins, however many players of the year awards, the whole deal, he owns all the trump cards".
