Tropical Storm Chris to bring showers

Elsewhere in the tropical Atlantic, Beryl - once a hurricane - has weakened substantially on approach to the Lesser Antilles.

The storm is forecast to come within 450 miles the west-northwest of Bermuda at noon on Wednesday, its closest point within the next 72 hours.

The storm was sitting almost still off the SC coast on Sunday, about 160 miles south of Cape Hatteras.

While Chris is expected to become a hurricane, it will stay offshore and head to sea, according to the storm center. The storm poses no threat to land, but forecasters expect it to become a hurricane on Monday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center.

Weather forecasters say Tropical Storm Chris is likely to strengthen to a hurricane by Monday but will remain well away from the USA coast for the next two or three days.

However, a small craft warning remains in effect for Barbados until 6a.m. Monday. It is 60 miles northeast of Martinique and 70 miles east-southeast of Dominica.

Environment Canada issued a tropical cyclone information statement saying that Tropical Storm Chris is expected to move northeastward from Carolina and gain strength by Tuesday.

Interests in the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic areencouraged to monitor the remnants of Beryl.

The storm was expected to move toward the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, or just south of those areas, on Monday.

Maria also inflicted significant damage on Guadeloupe, Dominica, and the U.S. Virgin Islands - all places that are expected to be drenched with several inches of rain in the coming days thanks to Beryl.

By Tuesday, the storm is forecast to degenerate but could still produce some gusty winds and heavy rain over Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
