BEIJING BETRAYAL? Trump Accuses China of MEDDLING in North Korea Talks

Mike Pompeo meets with Kim Yong Chol for a second day of talks at the Park Hwa Guest House in Pyongyang North Korea

After meeting with his North Korean counterpart for nearly 3 hours Friday, followed by a lengthy dinner, Pompeo and North Korea's former spy chief, Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol, were at it again Saturday morning.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimise the work that we've achieved".

After the Singapore summit in June, which also saw the USA promise to end military drills with South Korea, Mr Trump claimed that the North no longer posed a nuclear threat.

The U.S.is still demanding "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization (CVID)" of the nuclear-armed hermit state, he said Sunday.

Speaking in Tokyo after two days of intense discussions in Pyongyang, Pompeo insisted the talks were making progress and were being conducted in "good faith."

"These are complicated issues, but we made progress on nearly all of the central issues", Pompeo said.

In addition to Pompeo's remarks, the foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea, Taro Kono and Kang Kyong-wha, issued a statement of unity that the three will continue to pressure North Korea to abandon its illegal nuclear weapons program and abide by worldwide law. The trip was Pompeo's third to North Korea this year, and it marked the first time he did not meet with the leader.

"North Korea expected Pompeo to bring a concrete proposal for security guarantee but it was disappointed as the USA side reiterated the old demand that the North should denuclearise first before the United States gives it anything in return".

As diplomatic engagement increases contact between the two Koreas and reduces hostility across the border, authorities may be anxious ordinary North Koreans might view the South favorably.

The lawmaker's comments come one-day after North Korea criticized the USA for their push for denuclearization.

North Korea's latest comments were a reminder of the difficulties that previous USA administrations had negotiating with the reclusive state. They both said they had things to "clarify". But within little more than a week, the meeting was back on, because Trump was so transparently desperate for a foreign policy achievement.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh pose for photographers before a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hanoi, Vietnam, July 9, 2018.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went to North Korea last week hoping to "fill in" the details of a general commitment to "complete denuclearization" of the divided peninsula following an unprecedented U.S. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Mr Pompeo said.

Pompeo, who spoke with Trump, national security adviser John Bolton and White House chief of staff John Kelly by secure phone before starting Saturday's session, replied that he "slept just fine".

That clearly remains a point of contention with North Korea. "No one walked away from that, they're still equally committed". Yet Pompeo himself had earlier said he envisioned that occurring in about two and a half years, by the end of Trump's term, and Nauert later said the U.S. wasn't putting a timeline on the process.

"But a rushed summit and demands that NK denuclearize in short order or else is not a serious test of diplomacy", Haass tweeted.

Pompeo reported that the two sides had substantive discussions on next steps toward denuclearization and have set up working groups to hammer out details of an agreement.

"We thought that the U.S. side would come with a constructive proposal".

And he said some progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.

"But the economic sanctions are a different kettle of fish altogether. the world will see continued enforcement actions by the United States in the days and weeks ahead", Pompeo said.

KCNA said Pyongyang had offered to discuss declaring a formal end to the war to mark next month's anniversary of the armistice.

On her government's decision to suspend major combined military drills with the USA, she said it's aimed at facilitating the denuclearization process.
