Eight boys rescued from Tham Luang caves

Onlookers watched on as the boys were taken to hospital

The first rescue on Tuesday took about five-and-a-half hours.

It may be a race against rain for the rescuers.

Osatanakorn said officials did not want to waste time because of intensifying rain that could halt rescue efforts.

The unprecedented mission to evacuate the "Wild Boar" football team and their coach from a flooded Thai cave entered its end game Tuesday as rescuers said they will guide the remaining four boys and their coach to freedom.

"We have not been told which child has been brought out".

The rescued boys are being quarantined in case any of them contracted infections while inside the cave.

The rescue mission is expected to resume Tuesday morning local time to bring out the remainder of the team.

The weather in Chiang Rai, Thailand, where the boys and their coach are trapped in a cave, is "actually quite dry", said CBS News foreign correspondent Ben Tracy.

In a briefing just before noon, local time, mission chief Narongsak Osotanakorn - who has become the worldwide face of the rescue effort - said 19 divers (up from 18 on Sunday and Monday) would participate in the final push to bring the unprecedented operation to its conclusion. "For safety, the best number is four". Among them are weak swimmers and children as young as 11.

Thai soldiers walk out from the Tham Luang cave area as operations continue for the 8 boys and their coach trapped at the cave in Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on July 9, 2018. They were discovered nine days later by two British volunteer rescue divers. But in the past few days, they have avoided the heavy downpours that can flood the cave.

An worldwide team of engineers, rescue workers and divers have joined forces to help the group escape.

Treacherous Thai cave rescue bid enters day two
About 90 divers - 50 foreign and 40 Thai - are involved in the operation to remove the boys from the cave, he said. One of the boys, identified as Tun, wrote: "Mom and Dad, please don't worry, I am fine".

Then came the letters carried out by divers who took oxygen, food and medicine to the boys' refuge as experts evaluated whether to dive them out or provision them, perhaps until monsoon rains usually subside in late October.

The Seals, the key force in the operation, posted on their official Facebook page that Tuesday would be a longer day than Monday. "His determination and good intention will always be in the heart of all SEAL brothers. We will complete the mission for you".

Even if Musk's mini-sub is never used in the Thai rescue, the entrepreneur suggested its development has not been in vain.

Earlier, Dr Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, the secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, provided a detailed briefing on the health of the eight boys who have already been rescued.

He said two of them possibly have a lung infection but all eight are generally "healthy and smiling". The second group is still eating "medical food".

Doctors expect them to remain in the hospital for at least a week.

Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday.

Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda also said the boys were in good health.

"There's a likelihood of resilience, assuming everyone comes out, there's no fatalities, I think the worst is behind them", Adesman said.

This is a developing story.
