Trump says U.S. had opposed formula limits, not breastfeeding

The United States pressured other countries to stop a resolution that promoted breastfeeding at the United Nations, according to the New York Times.

The Times reported that the USA effort this spring during the United Nations -affiliated world health meeting was largely unsuccessful and that most of the original wording remained. It simply acknowledges the scientific consensus that breastfeeding is the healthiest option for infants, and works to regulate infant formula manufacturers so that they are not lying to consumers. But was it true?

"The failing NY Times Fake News story today about breastfeeding must be called out".

Trump wrote, "The U.S. strongly supports breast feeding but we don't believe women should be denied access to formula. Many women need this option because of malnutrition and poverty".

The United States once again complicated efforts to pass a United Nations-affiliated resolution, this time one encouraging breast-feeding, drafted by the World Health Assembly. Another section called on countries to restrict promotion of food products that could have harmful effects on children. When that largely failed, the US turned to threats-demanding that Ecuador's delegation refrain from introducing the bill as planned or be targeted with trade measures and cuts to military aid, the Times reports. Nevertheless, the U.S. delegation sought to wear down the other participants through procedural maneuvers in a series of meetings that stretched on for two days, an unexpectedly long period.

The Trump administration's slavish devotion to corporate profits and their contempt for the health and well-being of Americans and people throughout the world is beyond appalling.

While Donald Trump is set to take to the skies over London in the form of an angry baby blimp, his administration has caused multilateral alarm by threatening to launch yet another trade war in Geneva, over breast milk.

Hundreds of government delegates at the assembly expected the resolution to be approved swiftly.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby's life, followed by breastfeeding plus other appropriate, nutritious foods thereafter. A 2016 study found that "the deaths of 823,000 children and 20,000 mothers each year could be averted through universal breastfeeding, along with economic savings of $300 billion [USD]". The proposal was controversial even in the Obama administration.

The efforts of the United States were ultimately unsuccessful, as Russian Federation introduced the resolution.

What WHO and UNICEF should do now, after decades of modestly successful efforts to curb the unsafe use of baby formula, is to push for a global treaty: a Framework Convention on Formula Control modeled on WHO's successful Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

In a 2011 deposition, he became enraged when lawyer Elizabeth Beck asked for a break to pump breast milk for her infant daughter. "Baby Milk Action", which was favorably quoted in the article, and ran much of the anti-formula marketing part of the assembly, is known for its long-running boycott of Nestlé, which makes and markets baby formula to mothers.

During the discussions, USA delegates even threatened to cut aid to WHO. Trump said of his decision to withdraw from the agreement.

The Times says this scenario was verified by several other delegates present, many of whom requested anonymity for fear of retaliation from the U.S.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, in an email to the Times, defended the administration's stance.
