Egypt jails tourist for Facebook post

Lebanese tourist sentenced to eight years in prison for Facebook post against Egypt

A Lebanese tourist who was arrested last month for posting a video on Facebook complaining of sexual harassment and conditions in Egypt was sentenced to eight years in prison by a Cairo court on Saturday, Reuters reported.

In Mona el-Mazbouh's 10-minute video she described Egyptians as the "dirtiest people" and Egypt "the country of pimps. of beggars" after being sexually assaulted in the country's capital city.

"I definitely didn't mean to offend all Egyptians, and I never meant to say anything about the country's political affairs", Al-Mazbouh stated in her second video.

The 24-year-old was charged with "deliberately broadcasting false rumours which aim to undermine society and attack religions".

The allegations drew a strong reaction online, with some Egyptians calling for Mazbouh's arrest and lodging a complaint against her. The court's decision will still be appealed on July 29.

According to a report by The Times of Israel, the accused Mona el-Mazbouh was originally sentenced for 11 years in prison. Mazbouh also mentioned a previous visit to Egypt during which she was robbed of money.

"This sentence for insulting Egyptians is very cruel and is disproportionate for the crime she committed", said one Facebook user.

Mazboh's lawyer, Emad Kamal is quoted by Reuters as saying "Of course, God willing, the verdict will change".

He also said that he hopes that the Egyptian authorities would look beyond his daughter's mistake given her young age and naivety.

The prosecutor referred Madbouh to an expedited trial over the video.

Kamal further explained that Mazbouh suffers from depression and struggles to control her anger due to the removal of her brain clot in a 2006 surgery.

Mazbouh fiercely criticized the way she had been treated, claiming she was "harassed by taxi drivers and men in the street".
