Liberal Democratic group seeks dirt on SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Trump weighs top picks for Supreme Court amid last-minute maneuvering

Senators who could cast the deciding votes on the fate of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh gave little indication of where their heads were on the matter on Tuesday, hours after President Donald Trump announced his nomination.

Previously, the three front-runners for the nomination have been seen as Kavanaugh, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; Michigan's Kethledge, from the 6th Circuit; and Indiana's Barrett, from the 7th Circuit.

A George W. Bush appointee to his current position, Kavanaugh had worked as counsel and staff secretary in the White House before his nomination.

1994: Joins team of Mr. Starr, then independent counsel, on the Whitewater investigation, eventually writing much of the Starr Report that prompted the impeachment of President Bill Clinton by the House for lying under oath about an affair with a White House intern.

Stabenow said in a Monday statement that the vacancy "represents a very consequential moment for our country where we can chose to make progress on so many important issues for MI families or we can turn the clock back".

Speaking at the White House, Judge Kavanaugh spoke about his Catholic faith.

In a 2009 article for the Minnesota Law Review, Kavanaugh argued that the president should be exempt from "time-consuming and distracting" lawsuits and investigations, which he said would "cripple the federal government, rendering it unable to function with credibility in either the global or domestic arenas".

They have a good squad depth and know what they need to do in order to win a game. Losing teams in the semi-final matches play each other for third place.

"We'll also show you all the ways predictably the Democrats will try to obstruct the president's constitutional duty", Hannity said. The messaging initially centered on the future of abortion rights in the US under a court with Kavanaugh on it.

With Trump no favorite among liberals, Maddow's audience is likely to be smaller: Fox drew almost five times as many viewers as MSNBC for Gorsuch's nomination, the Nielsen company said.

He said Kavanaugh is considered "a brilliant judicial mind" and his selection was the result of a process set by "the most transparent president in history". The liberals' effort probably will focus on moderate GOP senators, such as Maine's Susan Collins and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, who might be wary of adding a hard-line conservative and risking decades-old precedents such as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973.

And pity poor Judge Thomas Hardiman, who just missed out on being the President's first Supreme Court pick, and was the unlucky bridesmaid again.

The Democrats are trying to pressure two Republicans, Sens.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., dismissed Democratic and liberal concerns over the president's nominee as hyperbole that will not persuade the American people. Protesters have filled the steps of the Supreme Court in recent days. In dissenting against the Affordable Care Act, Kavanaugh claimed that "the President may decline to enforce a statute... when the President deems the statute unconstitutional, even if a court has held or would hold the statute constitutional". Trump was decided on Kavanaugh by Friday, but waited until Sunday to inform the nominee.

Kavanaugh is Trump's second high court pick after Justice Neil Gorsuch.

"Justice Kennedy's resignation letter had barely arrived in the president's hands before several of our Democratic colleagues began declaring their blanket opposition to anyone at all", McConnell said.
