Liverpool close in on Shaqiri for bargain price

Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland in action during of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Round of 16 match between Sweden and Switzerland

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo reports that the Reds have opened discussions with the Stoke player, who is believed to have a release clause around £13.5 million.

He was the Potters' top scorer last season with eight goals as they were relegated from the Premier League.

Shaqiri has spoken publicly of his desire to remain in England , and talks between Liverpool, Stoke and the player's representatives are underway.

Shaqiri would not be seen as someone to come in and start games immediately, though Klopp appreciates the importance of depth across his attacking positions.

Monsoon Threatens Thailand Cave Rescue Operation
Two of the boys had suspected lung infections but the four boys from the first group rescued were all walking around in hospital. The boys and their coach had been stranded in Tham Luang Nang Non when they went exploring in the cave after a scrimmage.

Shaqiri joined Stoke in 2015 from Inter Milan before going on to make 84 league appearances for the club.

Since their season ended with defeat in the Champions League final to Real Madrid, Liverpool have added Brazilian midfielder Fabinho to their side from AS Monaco.

Now, with Switzerland knocked out of the World Cup by Sweden last week, it seems Shaqiri's future could be resolved imminently, with a report in The Telegraph claiming a move to Anfield looks likely.

Stoke are interested in taking 21-year-old winger Sheyi Ojo on loan but no decision has been made by Reds' boss Jürgen Klopp with regards that separate bit of business. Liverpool then fly to America for a three-game tour, where they will play Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup.
