Trump shares 'very nice note' from Kim Jong Un

S. Korea approves rare screening of N. Korea films

The White House had said earlier Pompeo would meet with the leader, but the encounter did not materialise and the top U.S. diplomat only met with Kim Yong Chol.

The Washington Post cites a "U.S. official with knowledge of the situation" who told the newspaper that the us negotiating team was ready at the border between the two Koreas on Thursday, but "it just didn't happen".

During Mr Pompeo's trip relations between the United States and North Korea appeared to take a dive as Pyongyang accused the U.S. of a "gangster-like mindset" during the high-level negotiations. Kim praises the significance of their meeting and the joint statement they put out, but the letter doesn't do much to support Trump's claim that progress is being made in his stated goal of denuclearizing North Korea.

Kim did not meet with the secretary of State.

During Pompeo's recent trip, meant to negotiate the details of the nuclear agreement signed during the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, North Korea called denuclearization demands by the USA "gangster-like".

There are about 7,700 USA soldiers classified as missing in action from the war.

An estimated 30,000 U.S. soldiers died in the 1950-53 Korean war.

The US president called it a "very nice note from Chairman Kim" and said "great progress is being made".

It had been expected at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom.

While reports stated the return would not involve payment, other than reimbursement for the costs incurred in recovering and repatriating the remains, reference to payments may have displeased Pyongyang.

Byrd, a forensic anthropologist, was part of a 15-strong DPAA team in North Korea 20 years ago.

Since the summit in Singapore, there has been increasing scrutiny of the agreement reached by Trump and Kim, with some experts suggesting that North Korea did not really intend to give up its nuclear weapons.

If the agency does return to North Korea, he said cooperation will be key.

According to estimates from the Pentagon, 7,700 USA troops are still unaccounted for from the Korean War. But he also acknowledged that a lot of work remained to be done, including on the issue of setting a timeline for denuclearization.
