US President to meet Theresa May to discuss post-Brexit ties

Donald Trump has arrived at Stansted Airport with his wife Melania for his first official visit to the United Kingdom since his election. "I think they agree with me on immigration", Trump said.

"Several of the events are expected to attract large crowds and there will be road closures in connection with those events", the statement said.

Protesters who will fly the giant inflatable near Parliament said the stunt has a serious message behind it. It will hover above Parliament Square later this week during the president's visit.

The embassy also warned Americans, however, to "exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent".

But besides that, the United States president is set to avoid much of the mass protests as most of his official engagements have been planned outside London.

However, despite the welcome from May, many Britons remain deeply opposed to Trump's visit. That includes this week's resignations of members of the Cabinet and Parliament over May's proposals to keep some agreements intact after leaving the European Union next year.

"It's a disastrous and divisive time, and Trump is very much part of that", he said.

She added: "They will be talking to teams on the ground and they will be liaising with police services up and down the country".

In the weeks before the American president's inauguration, May sent Trump a copy of the text of Churchill's 1941 Christmas Eve radio address to Americans, delivered while the prime minister was staying with U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The state visit was never actually scheduled - there has been fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain - and this trip is part of a working visit instead, meaning among other things that Mr. Trump will overnight at Winfield House, the USA ambassador's handsome residence near Regents Park, rather than at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle as a guest of the queen.

Dick said they will be linked through to units at the same level in sectors such as the intelligence world. "Are you honestly saying that the right to protest, the right to assemble, the right to free speech is limited by the ridicule it might cause to someone else?"

But that could change.

Churchill spent three weeks at the White House, cementing his close ties with Roosevelt and forming the basis for future relations between the US and Great Britain.

Demonstrator Claudia Boes said she was pleased at the turnout, adding "even outside the normal political circles this is an issue that affects people".

"You see, what's going on throughout the world with immigration..."

Yet according to David Wemer of the Atlantic Council, a new USA -U.K. trade deal isn't a high priority for the Trump administration.

Lance Price, who served as former Prime Minister Tony Blair's media adviser, told the Independent that no matter what the American convoy contends, the fact that Donald Trump is avoiding London points to a moral victory for the protesters. Trump and the first lady will then have tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle in the afternoon.

After London, he will travel to Scotland and then onto Helsinki to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
