May and Trump will have positive trade discussion - Hammond

Trump made his first trip to the U.K.as president after a tense summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels and only days after fresh ruptures in May's government over Britain's exit from the European Union.

But, as the two leaders stood together for a press conference in the garden of Ms May's grand 16th-century official residence Chequers, Mr Trump said the British leader was doing a "fantastic job", added it was up to her how to conduct Brexit, and that a free trade deal was very much on the table.

The president said: "The only thing I ask of Theresa is that we make sure we can trade and we don't have any restrictions because we want to trade with the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom wants to trade with us".

Trump praised May and her qualities, and said that he would be satisfied with whatever Brexit deal Britain struck with the EU. "The Chequers agreement reached last week provides the platform for Donald and me to pursue an ambitious deal that works for both countries right across our economies". As you say, the day started with headlines about his interview with The Sun, which were hardly helpful to Theresa May or her Brexit project. He was decidedly critical of May and her Brexit plan, saying he "would have done it much differently". As for Johnson, who was recently deposed, Trump said: "I think he would be a great prime minister".

"On this occasion we could assess the situation and we realised there was no direct threat to the president however it's absolutely something that is very serious".

The president is expected to tee off with a round of golf later this afternoon. "We record when we deal with reporters - it's called fake news".

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, a fierce critic of Trump, has refused to meet him and he was instead met at Glasgow airport on Friday by the British government's Scotland minister.

The offer to follow European Union rules in trade in goods sparked outrage among eurosceptics who want a clean break, and Trump appeared to back them.

MARTIN: What do you make of President Trump's remarks that immigration is changing the culture of Europe and not in a good way?

During his last visit to Scotland, Trump created a made-for-TV spectacle as he held a press conference at his course in Aberdeen.

Not everyone was protesting against Trump, however. The next, he says Prime Minister May can manage Brexit however she sees fit.

Chanting "No Trump, no KKK, no fascist US!", they flew a huge balloon of the president depicted as a crying baby outside the Houses of Parliament. "And it's for President Trump to explain why he singled me as the mayor of London out and not the mayors of other cities and leaders of other cities". The group claimed in a tweet that the protest forced Trump to take cover: "Watch as Donald Trump tries to hide from our message flying over his head". I think that this should get a lot of attention.
