Wimbledon 2018 men's semi-final: Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic

He's playing I think his second Grand Slam finals.

"You come into the match against him, knowing that you have to earn your points, it is already an energy-spending moment".

The length of that encounter forced Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal to play under the roof, with the match unable to conclude prior to the 11pm curfew.

He's the first South African to make a Wimbledon final since 1921 and the oldest first-time Wimbledon finalist in the Open Era at age 32. "It is what it is, I'm in the final of Wimbledon and it's an incredible achievement for me".

In the second longest match in Wimbledon history, Anderson triumphed after 6 hours and 36 minutes, 7-6 (6) 6-7 (5) 6-7 (9) 6-4 26-24.

Kevin Anderson called for changes to the fifth set format at Grand Slams after a marathon Wimbledon semifinal win over John Isner on Friday.

Novak Djokovic will play for his fourth Wimbledon title after beating world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in a five-set semifinal match that took an extra day to complete.

Friday 13th July will long be remembered in the history of tennis, with the men's semi-finals both throwing up remarkable match-ups.

Djokovic, who has 12 Grand Slam titles, hasn't won a major in more than two years, dealing with an injured right elbow that was so painful in 2017 he quit his quarterfinal at Wimbledon and sat out the rest of the season. If you go in the first week of Wimbledon and see some of the matches that go five sets, I just don't think they are entertaining.

In 2010, Isner was ousted in a speedy 74 minutes in the match following his marathon, saying afterward that he didn't have a chance. Only in this overtime, there is no time limit, and they keep playing until one team gets a stop.

"It's really tough on both of us, and at the end I feel like this is a draw between the two of us", Anderson said after stopping to sign autographs along with Isner after the match.

"Because it's been a long 15 months for me, you know, trying to overcome different obstacles".

"I was for the roof because we started to play, and I wanted to play in the same conditions".

"I need to reset as much as possible", Anderson said.

If Wimbledon's 2018 men's championship is remembered for anything, it may be its role in bringing about fifth-set tiebreaks.

Anderson had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner hit long.

It also meant that Djokovic and Nadal had been unable to finish their 52nd career clash on Friday night.

Nadal and Djokovic will have to resume their match on Saturday before the victor will play Anderson in the final on Sunday, meaning one of Djokovic or Nadal will not be well-rested heading into the final.

Djokovic leads the head-to-head 27-25 but trails 5-9 at Majors.

"But yeah, knowing that, maybe would be better if they play us first at 1:00, that's all". Djokovic would have his first break-point - and match-point - when the score was 8-7, but Nadal saved that with a courageous and cheeky drop shot.

Serena Williams Loses 2018 Wimbledon Final
Williams has not lost a Wimbledon final for 10 years, last defeated by someone who knows her better than most - her sister Venus. Perhaps more impressive was this: She broke Williams in 4 of 9 service games.
