Florida town reopens beaches after 2 apparent shark attacks

Two people were allegedly attacked by sharks in Fernandina Beach Florida on July 13

Fernandina Beach Fire Chief Ty Silcox says a 30-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were bitten on the feet.

Florida is no stranger to shark sightings.

The Fernandina Beach Fire Department responded to Seaside Park at around 3:35 p.m. for the first report of a shark bite.

An onlooker told First Coast News that she watched Theobald stumble and hop to dry land on one foot, screaming: "I got bit! Right now, they left the wound open to clear out any bacteria or infection or anything like that", Theobald said.

Theobald said he believes his attacker was either a nurse shark or black tip shark.

"I felt something grab onto my foot and pull, reached down for my foot", he said during a phone interview. "I put my hand on his head - he was probably four to five feet (long) - and when I did that, he shook twice and when I did that he released and left". It's 4-inch lacerations on the top and bottom'.

Israel strikes Gaza militant sites, Palestinians fire rockets
Since the protests and clashes broke out along the border on March 30, at least 141 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Molotov cocktails, flaming tyres and stones were also hurled in the direction of its soldiers, according to the Israeli army.

'It looks like I might have some tendon damage, ' he said.

WFXT, citing the Fernandina Beach Fire Department, said the 17-year-old was taken to a Jacksonville hospital with puncture wounds on the foot.

Shark sightings in Florida are regular and there were 32 reported attacks in 2016.

Even though shark populations are declining due to overfishing, the museum warns that attacks can increase as more humans wade into their feeding grounds.

Fernandina Beach's Division of Ocean Rescue closed all beaches in the area Friday, with officials posting double-red flags at beach entrances. It was unclear what type of shark attacked the younger swimmer or the circumstances of the attack.

Dustin Theobald is calling his encounter with a shark in shallow water a one in a million experience.
