Huge iceberg threatens Greenland village

Bergs calved from Helheim glacier float in Sermilik Fjord on the south-eastern coast of Greenland in this

If the iceberg becomes destabilised, and a larger chunk is broken off, it could create a tsunami, which could potentially destroy the town of Innaarsuit.

A giant iceberg is seen behind an Innaarsuit settlement, Greenland July 12, 2018.

An 11-million ton iceberg, perched off the coast of a tiny Greenland village, is striking fear in the hearts of residents.

Police have moved a search-and-rescue helicopter closer to the remote community, which has a population of about 170.

Kenneth Elkjaer, a radio journalist, said Sunday that the iceberg was 500 to 600 yards offshore and "everybody is waiting to see what happens to the weather".

Susanne K. Eliassen, a member of the village council, told the local newspaper Sermitsiaq that it was not unusual for large icebergs to be seen close to Innaarsuit, but that this was the biggest she had seen.

Researchers have warned of an increasing occurrence of icebergs as well as the accompanying tsunami hazards as climate change casts its sway on the island.

In June New York University scientists released video footage of a massive iceberg breaking away from a glacier in eastern Greenland.

In north-western Greenland previous year, four people died when the landslide resulted in tsunami which had engulfed several houses.

David Holland, an oceanographer at New York University who researches in Greenland, told NPR the following.

Holland said Wednesday that the time-lapse video, which is speeded up 20 times, shows "3 percent of the annual ice loss of Greenland occur in 30 minutes".

He said "it sounded like rockets going off " and described it as a very "complex, chaotic, noisy event".

Mr. Holland also adds that while he and his wife were studying in Greenland, "the real concern is in Antarctica, where everything is so big the stakes are much higher".
