Theresa May pitches for post-Brexit trade deal with Trump

Donald Trump and Melania Trump arrive in London on Thursday

Mr Trump said ahead of his visit that he could meet Boris Johnson, who resigned earlier this week over Mrs May's Brexit plan.

While President Donald Trump met with Prime Minister Theresa May Friday morning, First Lady Melania Trump set out for London to meet up with May's husband, Philip May, at London's Royal Hospital for an event with British schoolchildren and veterans.

Trump said: "I think he has not been hospitable to a government that is very important".

Mr Trump and Mr Khan have come to blows before, with the London mayor forced to call Mr Trump's claims about the capital untrue.

"Now, as we prepare to leave the European Union, we have an unprecedented opportunity to do more", she said. One person missing at the palace dinner, though, will be the queen, who will be hosting the president and first lady for tea at Windsor Castle on Friday afternoon.

Stoltenberg says Trump's approach is paying off.

"Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future", May added after calling for a free trade agreement with the U.S. after Britain leaves the European Union next March.

Asked if Putin is a friend or foe, Trump said: "I really can't say right now".

Trump will attend a gala dinner Thursday with British and American officials at Blenheim Palace, the ancestral home of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Release Prince Louis's 3 Official Christening Photos
The Royal Family has released several official photos to mark Prince Louis' christening last week at a royal chapel. One of the snaps shows them surrounded by Prince Charles , Camilla , Kate's family and Prince Harry and Meghan .

After a breach of protocol in bashing his hosts, Trump was on his best behaviour as he wrapped up the visit, insisting the U.S. -U.K. relationship is at "the highest level of special" before dropping by Windsor Castle for tea with the queen and heading off for a weekend at one of his golf courses in Scotland.

Donald Trump says politicians must "act quickly" to reverse the change that has happened in Europe. She praised the friendship between the two allies, glossing over Trump's previous remarks that Britain was a "hot spot" in turmoil over Brexit. "I don't know (if) that is what they voted for", he added.

"The United States' commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation remains very strong", Trump told reporters at a surprise news conference following the emergency session of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

Woody Johnson, the USA ambassador to the United Kingdom, said last week that Trump "knows how important the special relationship (with the U.K.) is firsthand and that's why the bust of Churchill is actually in the Oval Office as we speak".

"When we leave the European Union we will begin to chart a new course for Britain in the world and our global alliances will be stronger than ever", May said ahead of Trump's visit.

Clearly siding with Brexiteers Trump told the newspaper that May's proposal risked future UK-US trade deals.

Nick Hurd, Britain's Policing Minister, told parliament police expected more than 100 protests across the country, including two large demonstrations in London on Friday, and there were robust and proportionate plans in place.

The pair will then travel to Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, for what is being billed as "substantive bilateral talks on a range of foreign policy issues" during a working lunch.

May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan - which would keep Britain in a free trade zone for goods with the European Union but mean it has to share some European Union rules - was agreed by her cabinet only last Friday after two years of wrangling since Britons voted to leave the bloc in a 2016 referendum.
