World Cup afterglow gives France a sorely needed boost

France: Night of Violence, Riots and Looting After World Cup Win

USA singing stars sported French team shirts, decorated two stars to mark the 2009 and 2018 World Cup victories, at their concert at the Stade de France on Sunday night.

With demand for the French team jersey surging, police urged crowds to move away from the entrance of the Nike shop on the Champs Elysees early on Monday.

Reporter Joy Reid of New Zealand's 1 News has spoken of being tear gassed while covering the mayhem.

France beat Croatia 4-2 at the finals on Sunday.

Elsewhere, riot squads used tear gas to keep crowds in order.

Some 4,000 police and security forces were deployed across Paris during the World Cup festivities, with a vast security perimeter prohibiting vehicle access set up around the Champs Elysees.

A man in his thirties celebrating the French squad's victory died of cardiac arrest after smashing his auto into a tree in Saint-Felix, a small town north of Paris; while three children were rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being ploughed into by a motorbike in the north-eastern city of Nancy.

There was also serious trouble in the eastern city of Lyon, where hundreds of youths went on the rampage, attacking cars and setting fire to wheelie-bins.

In Frouard, two children - a six-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy - were reported to have been left seriously injured after they were hit by a motorbike which then drove away from the scene.

There was chaos on Sunday evening in other French towns where the victory was celebrated.

On the Champs Elysées itself about 30 people, some wearing ski masks, smashed the windows of the Publicis Drugstore and stole bottles of wine, some filming themselves on their cellphones.

"We're not still celebrating "Black-Blanc-Beur", we're celebrating brotherhood", he said of the current team.

Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and came to a close on Monday (AEST) with 64 games played in 11 cities across the country.

The Arc de Triomph was awash in the national colours, lit with the rooster, the faces of the winning team and the words 'Proud to be Blue, ' or French.

Croatia is planning a huge welcome ceremony for its players that will include celebrations at the main square in Zagreb and a reception with Mr Macron.

For all the insane antics - and some revelers who got out of control - a sense of patriotism and unity was nearly visceral.
