KC officers shot - police in standoff with suspect

Three police officers who were shot in Kansas City are expected to survive after a shootout, but the suspect has died.

Police say the suspect shot three officers earlier on Sunday while they were working on an undercover operation at a motel 3.2 kilometers from Kauffman Stadium.

As tactical and undercover officers were conducting an investigation at a location, and they encountered a rifle-wielding suspect, who shot two officers. The suspected gunman, armed with a high-powered semiautomatic rifle, fled the scene in a vehicle with a second individual, police said. His name hasn't been released, but police say he was under surveillance before gunfire erupted Sunday outside a motel and later at a nearby house. According to police, there was an exchange of gunfire when the shooting suspect was found.

The family of Sharath Koppu, a 25-year-old Indian student who was gunned down at a restaurant in the U.S. on July 6, expressed happiness over the killing of the suspect on Sunday.

The suspect was under surveillance as a person of interest in the shooting death of a UMKC student.

"An additional (3rd officer) was struck by gunfire and was taken to the hospital", KCPD reported on Twitter.

The suspect barricaded himself inside a home and began a standoff with police.

"We've been looking for him all week", Smith said.

"This is the first time we laid eyes on him", Smith said. The third officer was injured and one suspect was detained as the primary suspect fled again.

University Chancellor C. Mauli Agrawal expressed thanks in a statement Sunday to the officers who were wounded while investigating Koppu's death, saying they "risked their lives to pursue justice".

Police roped off about a three-block area and waited to get a warrant to search the entire property. A third officer was shot in the arm and taken to a hospital.

Jagdeesh Subramanian, president of the India Association of Kansas City, said the robbery and fatal shooting of Koppu appeared random and unfortunately "could have happened to anybody".

Worshippers at the United Believers Community Church were urged to leave the area as soon as possible.
