Papa John's founder now says stepping down a 'mistake'

Papa John's founder calls resignation a 'mistake'

Schnatter resigned as chairman on Wednesday, after Forbes reported his use of the word during a conference call in May, which was created to help Schnatter avoid public relations problems.

'The board asked me to step down as chairman without apparently doing any investigation. The contents of the letter were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

A special committee of Papa John's board of directors met on Sunday to discuss the recent controversy surrounding founder John Schnatter's use of the N-word.

"The derogatory and insensitive comments made by Papa John's founder John Schnatter are not reflective of Oregon State University's values and the inclusive environment we strive to foster throughout the university community and within OSU Athletics for all student-athletes and fans", Barnes said in a statement on Monday.

Schnatter stepped down as chairman last week after acknowledging that he used the term during a training exercise.

A Papa John's spokesman did not immediately reply to a request for comment. However, the announcement of Schnatter's resignation gave the company share price an 11% bump and there are now rumors it could be bought by a larger restaurant conglomerate.

The founder and former CEO also accused executives at Laundry Service of trying to extort $6million from Papa John's. "I'm like, 'I'm not paying you $6 million, '" he told the radio station.

'I really try to be considerate of other people's feelings with what I say or what I do.

Some board members want Schnatter - who owns about 30 percent of the company's stock - to leave the board altogether, Schnatter wrote in his letter.

They are taking the "John" out of "Papa John's". Schnatter apologized for his words, but has also said that his statement was taken out of context.

Schnatter reportedly recounted the incident in the letter, saying he said he wasn't racist during the conference call.

Laundry Service has not commented on Schnatter's allegations and did not return the Daily Mail's request for comment.

After members of the ad agency asked Schnatter about controversial comments he made regarding National Football League owners-which led to his stepping down as CEO of the company last year-Schnatter explained that he never uses the n-word.

Schnatter had already resigned as CEO past year after blaming disappointing sales on the NFL leadership's on the controversy surrounding football players kneeling during the national anthem.
