Samsung announces its first 8GB DDR5 RAM for mobile devices

Samsung LPDDR5

Interestingly, as far as we know, this is the first product that's using the LPDDR5 memory standard. The 16Gb GDDR6 DRAM has been in volume production since December 2017, and the 16Gb DDR5 DRAM was developed in February.

Samsung will release the 10nm LPDDR5 DRAM chips in two variants-a 6,400 Mb/s chip operating at 1.1V and a slightly slower 5,500 Mb/s chip that runs at 1.05V.

Compared to devices that use LPDDR4X chips, the 8GB LPDDR5 DRAM module offers a data rate which is up to 1.5 times faster. These speed improvements also come with a reduced amount of power consumption. The increased data rate allows the new LPDDR5 to send 51.2GB of data, or approximately 14 full HD video files (3.7GB each) in a second. This new 10nm class 8Gb LPDDR5 DRAM will be useful to support the upcoming 5G networks, and AI-powered mobile applications as well.

Kante suffered with a stomach bug during World Cup final
And ex-Barcelona striker Lineker believes Kante eclipses even Luka Modric as the hero of the tournament for Les Bleus. The 27-year-old has received a mass of praise over the last 48 hours from fans and players for his humble nature.

In terms of power savings, the 10nm-class LPDDR5 has been engineered to lower its voltage in accordance with the operating speed of the corresponding application processor when in active mode to maximize power savings. The company also claims multiple tweaks to the design which reduce overall power draw, including the ability to lower its voltage as the system CPU reduces its clock speed, a mode which avoids overwriting cells with a zero value, and a "deep sleep" mode with half the power draw of Samsung's current LPDDR4X's equivalent "idle mode" - all of which combine to reduce power draw by up to 30 percent, the company says.

Based on its industry-leading bandwidth and power efficiency, the LPDDR5 will be able to power AI and machine learning applications, and will be UHD-compatible for mobile devices worldwide. We should expect to see Samsung's new LPDDR5 memory inside of smartphones in the coming months, and then for years to come with next-gen smartphones announced in 2019 and beyond. Nearly all high-end phones, mobile devices, and even portable PCs these days use LPDDR4X or even just LPDDR4.
