Sterling flat ahead of United Kingdom parliament debate on Brexit

Prime Minister’s Questions

May's government was rattled by the departures of Johnson and her chief Brexit negotiator David Davis just days after she appeared to have gained the support of her cabinet for her strategy at a meeting at her Chequers country residence.

Tomorrow, they vote on the Trade Bill - the one May's government is most anxious about.

"I'm happy to sit down and listen and hear concerns from my colleagues", the prime minister told lawmakers ahead of the vote.

Arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said May faced the choice of rewriting her Brexit plans or splitting the Conservatives and scraping through on the back of opposition votes. "I think he's got what it takes", he added.

The compromise was vehemently criticised by pro-European MPs in her own party.

Markets expect the Bank of England to hike interest rates in August but the British currency has fallen 9 percent since April partly because of a dispute between May and members of her party who feel she wants to keep Britain too closely tied to Brussels.

Mrs May meanwhile revealed Donald Trump's advice to her on the Brexit negotiations had been to "sue the EU".

MPs are due to rise for the summer recess on July 24 but a motion tabled on Monday night would see the Commons rise on Thursday, with a vote pencilled in for Tuesday evening.

An early recess might not stop a potentially stinging resignation statement from Boris Johnson.

Israel Cuts Off Gas Supply to Gaza
Israel has stepped up it strikes since then to signal its new threshold for engagement after months of largely refraining to act. Egypt has also maintained the blockade with Israel over the strip, in an attempt to weaken Hamas.

The Chequers plan was "the only way to enable us to get a deal with no friction at the EU/UK border, to resolve the Northern Ireland border issue and to ensure that we can strike free trade deals around the world", said the spokesman.

Former worldwide development secretary Priti Patel, who is proposing one of four amendments to the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, told BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour the white paper had "many flaws around our independence and our ability to make free trade agreements".

Theresa May has appealed to warring Tory MPs to back her controversial blueprint for Brexit and avoid a disorderly withdrawal from the European Union which would damage Britain's interests.

The first locks Britain into only collect tariffs on behalf of the European Union if the bloc does the same for Britain - something it has said is unacceptable.

Former education secretary Justine Greening said the plans to follow European Union rules on trade in goods without being able to influence them was "the worst of both worlds".

Earlier Monday a pro-EU former minister described May's plans as a "fudge" on Monday and became the most senior member of May's Conservative party to back the idea of holding a second European Union referendum.

She said that would remove Britain's ability to have an independent trade policy and her government "will never stand for that".

"The only solution is to take the final Brexit decision out of the hands of deadlocked politicians, away from the backroom deals, and give it back to the people", she wrote in an article in The Times.

"Brexit is enormously positive, a huge opportunity for the country".
