Trump, after Helsinki summit, says he has confidence in US intelligence

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a press conference after their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki Finland Monday

"Our expectations are grounded in realism, but our hopes are grounded in America's desire for friendship, cooperation and peace", Trump said. Trump when on to say "There was no collusion at all".

Trump, in opening remarks, said that U.S. -Russia relations had been at their lowest point until the two sat down face-to-face in a highly-anticipated summit.

For his part, Trump criticised the ongoing U.S. investigation into the allegations as a "disaster". It worked out well for him last time.

Putin, for his part, also hamstrung Trump, admitting that he wanted Trump to win over Clinton. At a press conference Friday with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump said not to expect a "Perry Mason" moment where his Russian counterpart owned up to the interference. "The United States must be focused on holding Russian Federation accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy", Ryan added.

"This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russian Federation as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves".

"Yes, I did. Because he talked about bringing the U.S. -Russia relationship back to normal", Putin said. "All the more as the United States will host the World Cup in 2026". "However, I also recognize that in order to build a brighter future, we can not exclusively focus on the past - as the world's two largest nuclear powers, we must get along!"

Corker said Putin "gained a tremendous amount" from the day's meeting, having gone into it as an "ostracized" figure on the global stage but leaving as the recipient of relatively positive commentary from the US President.

"No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was similarly disdainful, saying Trump "had the opportunity to stand up to Putin".

Sen. John McCain calls President Donald Trump's press conference "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory".

He noted that Russia would expect the U.S.to return the favor and cooperate in the Russian probe against Bill Browder, a British investor charged with financial crimes in Russia.

Immediately following the press conference, the CNN journalist opened up his panel for discussion by speaking about Trump's behaviour.

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin shake hands at their summit in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putin's regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of worldwide treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world. We have another point of view... that a referendum was held in accordance with global law. There is simply no comparing the actions of the United States and Vladimir Putin.

The facts: Trump's focus on a DNC server may or may not be a red herring. He wrote: "'Clearly, a civilisation that feels guilty for everything it is and does will lack the energy and conviction to defend itself.' With the election of Ronald Reagan, the American people declared to the world that we have the necessary energy and conviction to defend ourselves".

Fox Business echoed Hume's comments.

Rather than saying "yes" or "no", Putin said he had "heard" about "rumors" of such material "allegedly" gathered when Trump was in Moscow in 2013 for the Miss Universe Pageant. He went on to say, "It's not a right or left thing". Contributor Guy Benson called the press conference "easily one of [Trump's] worst days as president", while Chief Political Anchor Brett Baier called it "surreal".
