UK PM May threatened rebels with a national election

Britain's Prime Minister, Theresa May speaks at the Farnborough Airshow, in Farnborough, Britain July 16, 2018.

On Friday, she will give a speech in Belfast about the government's Brexit White Paper and how it addresses the Irish border issue.

However Brussels has repeatedly said the United Kingdom can not "cherry-pick" its way out of the EU.

There will be a chance for them to take revenge in the Commons today when MPs pass their judgement on amendments to another crucial piece of Brexit legislation, the Trade Bill.

In dramatic scenes in the House of Commons, ministers made a last-ditch effort to avoid defeat by offering to introduce amendments in the Lords which would deal with "the essence" of rebel Tories' concerns over future customs arrangements.

That legal version of the backstop has already been rejected by Mrs May.

The hardliner amendments of several dozen MPs from the European Research Group led by Jacob Rees-Mogg, basically kill off all of May's proposals in the white paper that meant to create workable solutions for both the United Kingdom and the EU.

"That is not acceptable to democratic Ireland", he added. Alliance deputy leader Stephen Farry said: "The approach of the DUP in supporting the Government in voting down a customs union is particularly illogical".

"The backstop does not cut off Northern Ireland from the Great Britain market, rather allowing us to more easily be part of both the United Kingdom and European Union economies", he added.

The YouGov poll also handed Labour a five-point lead over the Conservatives as Brexit infighting continues to overtake May's party.

He has opted to make a formal resignation statement, as he is entitled to do under parliamentary convention, rather than speak in a Commons debate, as David Davis - who also quit the cabinet over Brexit - chose to do on Monday.

These make it extremely difficult for the United Kingdom to negotiate a viable solution for avoiding a hard border on the island on Ireland, where the EU's new external border should be after Brexit, and to which May committed to keeping it open.

"The simple way out of this is for Britain to remain within the single market, and remain within the customs union".

Why the change? Well, with just eight months to go until the official Brexit day on 29 March 2019 and still some pretty major hurdles to clear in the negotiations, there is genuine concern amongst Welsh Government officials about a "no-deal" Brexit.

"That would have looked too much like plunging the knife into the prime minister", a close ally told Sky News.

By 305 votes to 302 - with 14 Tories rebelling - MPs backed an amendment that prevents the United Kingdom from collecting taxes on behalf of the European Union, unless the rest of the European Union does the same for the UK. Unless the Article 50 period is extended-which requires the consent of European Union member states-the United Kingdom will leave the European Union next March.
