Mark Zuckerberg Refuses to Ban Holocaust Deniers from Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg speaks at a 2017 developers conference in San Jose

And Matt Ford, a reporter at The Atlantic, pointed out that Mr Zuckerberg had not even been asked about the Holocaust - "he just said he'd keep it on Facebook on his own".

Whoopi Goldberg came this close to dropping an F-bomb on live television Thursday morning on "The View", after getting fired up over Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg allowing Holocaust denier theories to float around the social media platform.

"I'm Jewish and there's a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened", he told reporter Kara Swisher.

"I think you have this question from a policy perspective, which is, 'do we want American companies to be exporting across the world?'" Zuckerberg said in an interview with technology news website Recode.

"I don't get it".

"It's hard to [question] intent and to understand the intent".

He added that he doesn't think they are "intentionally" getting it wrong.

Facebook has been under scrutiny for its role in letting "fake news" and hate speech exist on its platform.

Facebook's chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, recently defended the company's decision to keep on its platform the site Infowars, a prominent right-wing outlet known for spreading conspiracy theories and baseless information. According to CNN, the head of Facebook's News Feed, John Hegeman, replied by saying Facebook doesn't take down false news.

The New York Times reports that the move is a response to incidents in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and India, where rumors that spread on Facebook led to targeted attacks on minorities.

Zuckberg said that, although he finds Holocaust denialism deeply offensive, it's not Facebook's job to prevent anyone from saying something false, but rather to combat fake news and misinformation that's spread maliciously. "I just think, as abhorrent as some of those examples are, I think the reality is also that I get things wrong when I speak publicly", he continued.

The Anti-Defamation League argued that Facebook had a "moral and ethical obligation" to not allow Holocaust denial on the site.

"If people have flag them as potential hoaxes, we send those to fact-checkers who are all well reputable and have followed standard principles for fact checking, and if those fact checkers say that it is provably false, then we will significantly reduce the distribution of that content". "ADL will continue to challenge Facebook on this position and call on them to regard Holocaust denial as a violation of their community guidelines". Monika Bickert, Facebook's head of global policy, explained the distinction in May, telling an event at Oxford University that "something might be illegal in 10 countries, but if only two countries say 'this is important to us, it's illegal, remove it, ' we will do it".
