Trump says he has 'low expectations' for meeting with Vladimir Putin

Ahead of Trump-Putin meeting, lack of preparation leads to low expectations: Sources

In the same interview, he named Russian Federation and China as "foes". And I really think the world wants to see us get along.

European Council President Donald Tusk has urged President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and China to work with Europe to avoid trade wars and prevent conflict and chaos.

Russia's largely Kremlin-friendly TV networks, websites and newspapers portrayed Trump as a political maverick who is being unfairly targeted by his own compatriots.

Putin made Trump wait for him, arriving behind schedule in Helsinki as the two leaders attempted yet another reset of U.S-Russian relations.

The US president left after another round of golf at his Turnberry resort on Sunday after a four-day visit.

But Trump's top aide signaled that would not be the approach the president takes.

"I'm not going with high expectations", he told CBS at the end of his controversial United Kingdom visit, which sparked mass protests, adding that he expected talks with Putin to produce "nothing bad" and "maybe some good".

The biggest takeaway was Trump refusing to say if he believed American intelligence agencies' findings that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election.

US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman also downplayed expectations, saying the two leaders were merely going to have a "conversation" rather than a "summit". But as to impeachment, we'll see how this plays out.

The meeting has already been condemned by members of Congress from both parties after the USA indictment last week of 12 Russian military intelligence officers accused of hacking Democrats in the 2016 election to help Mr Trump's presidential campaign.

On Friday, the U.S. Justice Department indicted 12 Russian intelligence officers over alleged crimes tied to Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election in 2016.

Former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Trump "failed America today", but stopped short of calling the President's behavior "treasonous".

Democrats have slammed Trump for his behavior at last week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where he publicly criticized member nations for what he considered insufficient defense spending, and for his criticisms of British Prime Minister Theresa May when he visited England. You know the Russians take the position - you can like it or not like it - that their Constitution forbids them to extradite Russian citizens'.

"It went well", he said.

"The US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than the EU".

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating possible links between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation as part of his probe into Moscow's attempts to interfere in the 2016 election.

But Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike said that issue should be a basic starting point for the talks.

Questions are swirling about whether Trump will sharply rebuke his Russian counterpart for the election meddling that prompted a special counsel probe.

The United States has no extradition treaty with Moscow and can not compel Russian Federation to hand over citizens.
