Apple will exclusively use Intel modems in 2018 iPhones

9to5Mac

The phone is expected to feature the same design and specs as the 5.8-inch iPhone Apple will debut in September, but it will have a bigger 6.5-inch OLED screen and will be priced $100 higher than the smaller model. Unfortunately, a new report from an Apple insider with a great track record suggests this second new iPhone model could be in very short supply at launch, or it might even be delayed. That's not good news for iPhone users.

This is why I said it reminds me of what Apple did with the iPhone 5c; that phone was cheap, and it came in loads of color options. The current $999 and $1,149 price points will then be occupied by the new 6.5-inch "iPhone X Plus".

World Cup's best goal goes to Benjamin Pavard's swerving rocket
Pavard scored a screamer in France's match against Argentina in the Round of 16, a goal fans have voted as the best goal. The 22-year-old defender made a run on the right and made a first time contact with a cross from Lucas Hernandez.

An independent Ookla study (full disclosure: Mashable parent company Ziff Davis also owns Ookla), the speedtest company revealed just how inferior Intel's modems are compared to Qualcomm's latest modems.

The cheaper, LCD model will likely retail for $700/£700, while the iPhone X replacement will be somewhere in between. Apple sued its modem supplier over the cost of LTE modems, where it claims that Qualcomm was using its dominant position in the market to get more favourable contracts. The silver lining is that Huberty had initially forecast a 6-month delay. "We will continue to provide modems for Apple legacy devices". It's been hard enough for Apple to produce a sufficient amount of units at the beginning, thanks to the complicated TrueDepth camera, so it didn't want to add yet another hue complexity to the production process to manage. One thing's certain for now, if Davis is to be believed: we'll only see Intel chips in iPhones. Qualcomm has also tried to get numerous iPhone models banned from sale in the U.S., unsuccessfully.
