Explosion reported outside United States embassy in Beijing

Apart from the US Embassy, Chaoyang District is home to many foreign diplomatic missions.

A 26-year-old Chinese man set off a small explosive device outside the U.S. embassy in Beijing on Thursday, injuring his hand in the blast before he was taken into custody, police said. However, no casualties were reported due to the incident.

Beijing police said a "suspected firecracker device" caused a fire, the BBC reports.

The individual was the only one injured in the incident and their condition was not immediately known.

Initial images showed a large amount of smoke in the area, with police vehicles surrounding the blast site.

Earlier reports on social media claimed that a man attempted to throw a homemade bomb into the gated compound of the embassy, but the device went off earlier than planned.

Another witness said there were seven to eight police vehicles near the embassy and the road next to the complex had been closed off. Police said only the suspect was wounded, suffering an injury to his hand.

Although it is not known if the reported blast is terrorism-related, U.S. embassies are frequently the target of terrorist violence, with a dozen incidents reported at American diplomatic posts around the world over the past decade. It is not clear if the two incidents are related.
