Planetarium to make arrangements for viewing Blood Moon

The 'super blue blood moon' is seen over Los Angeles California

The longest total lunar eclipse of the century is coming Friday, and it will transform the moon into a reddish orange color for more than 100 minutes, according to NASA. The eclipse will be visible all across the globe, except North America.

If you miss the lunar show on Friday night‚ you will have to wait until May 16 2022 to see the next eclipse. The fact that the moon appears so small and takes longer to pass through Earth's shadow is also why the eclipse lasts longer.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and into its shadow.

All of this is easily visible with the naked eye. Once totally immersed, it turns to a deep red colour.

Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses don't require special equipment for viewing. Dr Edward Bloomer, also an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, said: "Although Mars being in opposition is a regular event, the elliptical orbits of the planets mean the distance between them can vary quite a bit".

What's more, the eclipsed moon will on Saturday be close to the planet Mars, which according to Earth Sky, is at its peak brightness. Those of you in the United Kingdom should look for this eclipse starting in at around 11PM (that's 23:00 hours) local time.

This is the latest eclipse of the space-housed pair we call our own home (Earth) and our moon.

The lunar event will last for 103 minutes - four minutes short of the longest possible duration an eclipse could last.

In mainland France, the eclipse will be visible from 10 pm - 10.30 pm and it is expected to last until almost 12.30 am. We'll be treated to a total lunar eclipse on January 19, 2019, that will be visible from from North and South America, Europe, Africa.

Star-gazers are set for a night-time spectacle as a blood moon lunar eclipse will be making an appearance at the end of the week. - Will we be able to observe the lunar Eclipse? For the Egyptians, the eclipse serves as a sow swallowing the moon for a brief time.

The live stream, which you can find here, will kick off on the night of the eclipse at 7.30pm BST (6.30pm UTC). So, start clearing your schedule for Friday because this total lunar eclipse is happening with or without you.
