Sterling adds to recent gains after May says to lead Brexit talks

Brexit without a trade deal would lead to civil unrest within two weeks, Amazon's top United Kingdom manager said.

Mr Raab appeared alongside the Prime Minister' Europe adviser Olly Robbins in front of MPs amid increasing Brexiteer concerns about the influence of the senior civil servant.

Meanwhile, efforts to fix the European Union's relationship with the White House will see Jean-Claude Juncker meet Donald Trump in Washington for talks on the trade dispute between the USA and its allies.

Speaking to the BBC, Raab refused to deny reports the government is planning to stockpile food or use a section of motorway in England as a lorry park to deal with increased border checks if Britain leaves the European Union without a deal.

Mr Raab said: "That kind of selective snippet that makes it into the media to the extent that the public pay attention to it is unhelpful".

But while there are a few who might wallow in pessimism or have us cower in a corner at this historic crossroads, I am confident Britain's best days lie ahead.

Part of the Government's planning involves securing supplies of food and medicines.

Cohen recording of pay-off talk broadcast on US TV
Trump's legal team, however, previously waived Trump's attorney-client privilege on the recording . On the audio tape, made two months before the election, Trump can be heard saying "pay with cash".

Dominic Raab, the recently-installed UK Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, told a committee of MPs yesterday (24 July) the Government would intervene and co-operate with industry but said any description of its efforts as "stockpiling" were "wrong".

Raab said the new bill is aimed at providing further certainty at home and in the negotiations that Britain is getting on with the job of delivering a smooth and orderly Brexit while giving parliamentarians an opportunity to consider the detail of the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill before it is introduced.

Unveiling the plans in a white paper in the House of Commons, Mr Raab described it as "another key milestone in the UK's path to leaving the EU". Mr Barnier and I will be discussing how we complete the remaining 20 per cent, including guarantees to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Of course, there is no deal unless we agree the whole deal - it must work for the United Kingdom and the EU.

Earlier Raab, who has already held talks with the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier, appeared in the House of Commons to announce the publication of a new government White Paper explaining how Britain's European Union withdrawal agreement will be put into law.

"Exiting the EU without agreement on this matter would leave regulators in limbo in March 2019, and even under the terms of the draft EU-UK withdrawal agreement, access to such databases would be switched off post-2020", it suggested.
