Longest Lunar Eclipse of the Century

Red Moon Morocco to Witness the Longest Eclipse of the Century Tonight

It wasn't visible in the USA, but it could be seen from places like South America, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Because blue and violet wavelengths are scattered more than red and orange ones, more of the red wavelengths reach the moon, making the moon appear red.

Totality, the period of time that the moon is fully in Earth's shadow, will last for approximately 103 minutes (1 hour, 42 minutes), with partial phases occurring before and after. During this time, the shadow of the earth will be between the moon and the sun. Sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere will light the moon in a dramatic fashion, turning it red. But now, the weather in some areas is of heavy rainfall.

"It's called a blood Moon because the light from the Sun goes through the Earth's atmosphere on its way to the Moon, and the Earth's atmosphere turns it red in the same way that when the sun goes down it goes red", he said.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind Earth, so that the Earth blocks the sun's rays from striking the moon.

"If that were true, we'd be in big trouble given the gravitational pulls on Earth, Mars, and our moon!" the NASA website states.
