Thieves snatch Swedish crown jewels in daylight heist

Thieves took two crowns and an orb from the Swedish royal family's collection, and then made off in a motorboat.

They were stolen from the Cathedral of Strangnas, a 900-year-old church around 80 miles from the capital, Stockholm.

The crowns once belonged to King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, whose jewels are on display at the cathedral. Royal Central reports that the crowns were burial crowns that were later exhumed and put on display at the cathedral.

The Swedish Royal Family's crown jewels from the 17th century are seen in this undated handout photo obtained by Reuters on August 1, 2018.

The thieves have not yet been captured.

Agnevik added: "We are looking for a small and open motorboat".

Police have been searching for the culprits with a helicopter and boats, but no arrests have been made.

'The two men hurriedly jumped on board.

"We want to spread information and pictures of these items so that they can be identified as stolen objects", police spokesman Thomas Agnevik said.

The royal jewels are adorned with gold, precious stones and pearls, and come from the 1611 funeral regalia of Sweden's Charles IX and Kristina the Elder.

"I knew immediately they were burglars because of the way they were behaving".

Christofer Lundgren, dean of the cathedral, said: 'This is part of the national cultural heritage - this is a theft from Swedish society'. "It's despicable that people would steal from a holy building and a historical building".

The spokesman said they could have left the motorboat and jumped in a getaway auto heading west into the hinterlands, or east to Stockholm.

"We have high hopes of getting them back", he told Swedish media outlets.
