President Trump asked John Kelly to remain chief of staff through 2020

Donald Trump John Kelly

Mr. Kelly told colleagues at a staff meeting Monday that President Trump asked him to stay and that he planned to do so, according to multiple reports. The public show of confidence in Kelly, even if later reversed, appeared aimed at tamping down speculation about staff turnover, as well as projecting calm as the president gears up for his re-election campaign.

That's according to three White House officials Tuesday, who were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

The president congratulated Kelly on his one-year anniversary on Monday during a swearing-in ceremony of the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie.

Kelly stumbled when he issued a strong defense of former White House staff secretary Rob Porter after DailyMail.com reported that two ex-wives had accused him of abuse. The chief of staff also, at times, had differences with advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, wondering what the presidential daughter and son-in-law did all day, one White House official said. Job security for Trump's staffers always seems to depend on the whims of their mercurial boss. Today we celebrate his first full year as @WhiteHouse Chief of Staff!

He writes: "Congratulations to General John Kelly".

It was July 28 of a year ago when Trump announced Kelly would replace Reince Priebus. Under Kelly's tenure Oval Office events have frequently developed into long question-and-answer sessions followed by aides shouting at reporters to get out of the room. "Kelly is essentially calling Trump's bluff", says Sherman.

Undoubtedly this is excellent news as Kelly's keen knowledge, valorous character, and experienced management ability has seemingly served the president very well this past year.

In the past, Trump has been coy about Kelly's role going forward.
