Huawei Overtakes Apple as New #2 Smartphone Maker

This bad boy was selling well

It's the third straight quarter showing a year-over-year decline in smartphone shipments - and the first time in eight years Apple hasn't been the number one or two smartphone company in terms of market share.

"The importance of Huawei overtaking Apple this quarter can not be overstated", said Ben Stanton, a senior analyst at Canalys, which also reported the shift in quarterly market share. Many companies have tried to rise above the likes of Apple and Samsung only to drop off the map later.

With that, Apple has been knocked off the #2 spot in global phone shipments for the first time in eight years - since the second quarter of 2010, to be precise.

"Even as Samsung smartphone shipment volumes declined globally, the brand posted a record second quarter in India, regaining its top position in Indian smartphone market", said the report.

Apple are synonymous with smartphones, with the iPhone the go-to name on the market for many people, but according to data released today, they aren't the biggest producer of smartphones in the world.

Bank of England hikes interest rates to 0.75%
RBI Governor Urjit Patel said the RBI survey of households reported an uptick of 20 basis points in inflation expectations. The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to be held between 3rd and 5th October, 2018.

After 7 years of Apple-Samsung dominance, Huawei has managed to break the link by launching attractive, premium segment smartphones and capturing the mid-tier segment with its fast-growing Honor sub-brand, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research, said in the report.

"The continued growth of Huawei is impressive, to say the least, as is its ability to move into markets where, until recently, the brand was largely unknown", said Ryan Reith, programme vice president of IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Tracker. Samsung has been facing severe competition from Chinese manufacturers, especially Huawei and Xiaomi.

"The steady focus on high-end flagship smartphones and unprecedented community connect helped OnePlus earn user trust and spread brand awareness through word of mouth". While Apple shipped 41.3 million handsets, compared to 41 million in the same period a year ago.

OPPO had a good result as well with an improvement of 5.1 percent year on year and sits in fourth position for market share.

On the flipside, Samsung still topped the list at 71.5 million units, in spite of a 10.4% decline in shipments from previous year. LG, however, while not on the level of Samsung when it comes to small OLED displays features and production capacity, is still way ahead of the game from the distant third, so it will easily find a market from every phone maker that isn't Samsung.
