In Afghanistan, the militants seized hostages

Blasts & heavy gunfire reported in eastern Afghanistan

Several blasts, followed by heavy gunfire, were reported near a provincial hospital and the Department of Migrants and Refugees in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, according to local media.

Since the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014, a resurgent Taliban have stepped up attacks across the country and an Islamic State affiliate has also emerged, staging high-profile attacks that have claimed scores of civilian lives.

At least one of the men blew himself up at the gate and two others entered the building, the witness said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The fighting ended after one attacker detonated an explosive vest and the second was shot dead by security forces, Khogyani said.

Attahullah Khogyani, the spokesman for the provincial governor, said another 14 people were wounded in Tuesday's attack.

At least 11 people have been wounded and a "large number" of employees had been rescued, Khogyani said.

Khogyani said the attack happened during a meeting with NGOs working on refugee-related issues.

Two militants killed by the security forces.

As security forces cordoned off the area, gunshots and what appeared to be hand grenade explosions could be heard as a cloud of black smoke drifted into the sky.

Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the local provincial council, told Reuters that the attack had specifically targeted that building.

An explosion on Tuesday rocked the department of refugees and migrants in the Afghan city of Jalalabad.

The city, which is the capital of Nangarhar province, has witnessed a number of attacks this month. He added that he could not confirm if there were any casualties.

The head of the department and several other people had been taken to safety, he added.

And 22 people were abducted by unknown assailants from vehicles on a highway linking Kabul and Gardez, a city in the eastern province of Paktia.

A suicide bombing claimed by IS on a crowd of Afghan Sikhs and Hindus in Jalalabad on July 1 killed 19 people and wounded 21.
