Presumed US remains from site of famous Korean War battle

Vice President Mike Pence hailed the remains' arrival in Hawaii as evidence of the success of President Donald Trump's landmark summit in June with North Koran leader Kim Jong Un.

President Trump received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this week, . coinciding with the return of potentially dozens of America's war dead from the North.

Trump said in that tweet to Kim that "I look forward to seeing you soon!"

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement regarding Kim's actions, confirming the President and his North Korean counterpart have an "ongoing correspondence".

In July, he revealed the full contents of another letter from Kim on Twitter.

The repatriation was part of an agreement Trump and Kim reached at their historic summit in Singapore in June.

More than 400 caskets of remains found in North Korea were returned to the United States between the 1990s and 2005, with the bodies of some 330 other Americans also accounted for, according to the DPAA.

More than 7,700 USA troops remain unaccounted for from the Korea War.

Almost 7,700 American military service-people are still unaccounted for from the Korean War, according to the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, of which approximately 5,300 are thought to be in North Korea.

The U.S. military sent 200 boxes to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea in anticipation of the latest transfer, but North Korea handed over only 55 boxes, McKeague said, explaining that U.S. officials didn't know the specifics in advance.

Experts say positively identifying the decades-old remains could take anywhere from days to decades.

McKeague did not say whether the United States would continue reimbursing North Korea, should field operations in the country resume.

Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at the repatriation ceremony inside Hawaii's Hickam Air Force Base, said the move was a sign of goodwill from Kim, adding that the identification process would be completed in the near future.

The scientist said the remains were consistent with being from the Korean War. Technically, the two Koreas are still at war.

"One of the things that hasn't happened is the demonstrable moves toward denuclearization before we can entertain something like the end-of-war declaration", Harris said, according to Yonhap.

The brutal battle between US and Chinese troops in northeast North Korea saw thousands of US Marine and Army casualties, with an estimated 1,000 Americans deemed missing afterward.
