PS4 Breaks 80 Million Units Sold - Hardware

PS4 Expected To Have Outsold Lifetime Sales Of PS3 Within Months

While the numbers might not sound that impressive compared with other companies like Samsung or Apple, Sony recorded $17.9 in revenue and $1.8 billion of profit in the recent quarter that ended in June.

Sony's PlayStation 4 family of consoles have now shipped more than 80 million units globally, the company recently announced.

Other divisions like the music division brought Sony roughly $288 million in profit along with the home entertainment and sound division that made a healthy growth of $156 million.

Sales of PlayStation 4 products were "better than expected" as a result of popular gaming titles, Yasuo Imanaka, an analyst at Rakuten Securities, said before the results were announced.

Operating profit was 195 billion yen ($1.75 billion) in the June quarter, the Tokyo-based company said Tuesday, compared with analysts' average projections for 145.4 billion yen.

The upward revisions were largely due to foreign exchange gains, brisk sales of PlayStation 4 software and the growing value of its shares in top streaming platform Spotify. Sony note that a lot of the profit came from sales via the PSN as gamers slowly move towards digital purchases rather than physical discs.

Sales figures as astronomical as 75 million in almost 5 years earns the PS4 the title of most popular gaming console in the world...ever!

Growth was even sharper, at 61 percent, when excluding the previous year's one-time gain from the sale of Sony's camera module unit and receipt of insurance payouts for quake damage. Sony hasn't said if or when it could sell its remaining holding. The division includes sensors, which Sony expects to grow in the mid-to-long term as applications expand to vehicles, factory automation, surveillance and depth sensing. While Sony didn't manage to find the same success with the PS3, which was a rather slow burner, they are now the market leader with PS4 that is also making their Games and Network Services segment generate the most amount of revenue for the company.

It kept its profit forecast for the year ending March at JPY 670 billion, down 8.8 percent on year, citing various potential risks including competition in smartphones.

But he also said the outlook is uncertain.
