Sanders stands by Trump after he calls press 'enemy of the people'

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to say whether she agrees with President Donald Trump's attacks on the media as the "enemy of the people," getting into a protracted exchange with CNN's Jim Acosta over what she believes are unfair attacks coming from news outlets.

The old quote came to the fore again after Ivanka Trump, the daughter of the president, said earlier on Thursday that the press was "not the enemy", as well as insisting she was against controversial family separations for illegal migrants.

Sanders then mentioned the harassment she's received by the press, including personal attacks made against her at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. "The media has attacked me personally on a number of occasions, including your own network". He made it particularly easy for Sanders to say what had been clear to the country in less authoritarian times.

Acosta returned to the briefing room and went live on CNN, calling the demonization of the free press "un-American".

Before delving deep into his monologue, the Fox News host reiterated that "violence against any member of the press" is "reprehensible" and that "no real conservative" would ever support violence committed against the media, adding that he'd be the "first person to jump in" and that he trains five days a week doing MMA. "Forgive me for going on a rant, but I think that they've lost sight of that here at this White House". "So I'm sorry", he wrote.

"As far as I know I'm the first press secretary in the history of the United States who has required Secret Service protection", Sanders said. "We're done", yelled one White House staffer.

Top Officials Highlight Election Security
He added that while Russian Federation has attempted to influence campaigns in the past, "they stepped up their game in 2016". All 50 states have partnered with the DHS to bolster nations' election infrastructure, Nielsen explained.

Coats also said: "The intelligence community continues to be concerned about the threats of upcoming us elections, both the midterms and the presidential elections of 2020".

On Wednesday, the White House was asked whether the Trump administration condones the actions of their supporters.

Trump previously tweeted that 3D printed plastic guns didn't "make much sense".

Instead, Sanders recited a litany of complaints against the press and blamed the media for inflaming tensions in the country. "But no, I do not feel that the media is the enemy of the people".

"The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media", Trump wrote.

Trump has repeatedly referred to the press as the "enemy of the American people" and "fake news".
