United Kingdom heatwave to continue as Europe roasts

Euro scorcher: European heatwave could reach all time highs with temperatures expected to reach a sizzling 48C this weekend

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the record for Spain is now 47.3 Celsius, while for Portugal it's 47.4 Celsius.

Europe's Mediterranean coast has weather heatwave warnings in place after it is predicted that Spain and Portugal could experience temperatures of up to 48 degrees later this week.

Europe sweltered Saturday in intense heat with temperatures hitting near-record highs of 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) in Portugal, while elsewhere the high temperatures, exacerbated fires and melted the asphalt on highways.

In Portugal's southern Alentejo province, streets were largely deserted.

High temperatures are being driven higher by a hot air mass moving north from Africa, which is also bringing dust from the Sahara Desert.

Some 400 firefighters and five water-dropping aircraft, meanwhile, were battling a wildfire in southern Portugal's Algarve region.

Forecasters say if the heat continues to rise, national temperatures are likely to be broken this weekend - the current hottest day in European history 41 years ago may also lose ground.

THESE sweat-inducing weather maps show where "very extreme" heat will blast through Europe and Britain this week, sending temperatures surging to extraordinary levels.

Some places in Sweden have had their driest May-to-July period on record, according to its meteorological agency, and a number of weather stations have recorded only 10% to 15% of their normal rainfall.

'Temperatures will remain pretty hot across at least the south of England but potentially more widely across the United Kingdom - we could see some wet weather coming across the north west, but still pretty hot, ' the spokesman said.
