Charlotte Rae, Mrs. Garrett from The Facts of Life, Dies at 92

Charlotte Rae, who had a six decade career as an actress and was best known as the wise housemother on The Facts of Life, died Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Milwaukee native, who attended but did not graduate from Northwestern University, was a Tony-nominated Broadway star and successful TV character actress when she was hired on "Diff'rent Strokes".

"You all already know my heart is heavy yet", tweeted actress Kim Fields, who played Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey on Facts of Life. I'm not in any pain right now. "Now I have to figure out whether I want to go have treatment again to opt for life".

She became the house mother at an all-girls' boarding school in The Facts of Life after her appearance as Edna Garrett on Diff'rent Strokes was a big hit in the late 1970s. She finally left the show in 1986 for health reasons, replaced by Cloris Leachman.

Sony Pictures Television now controls the distribution rights to the NBC show which ran from 1979-1988 show.
