Disney's live-action Star Wars series could cost whopping $100M

Disney's live-action Star Wars series could cost whopping $100M

Iger said that Disney was "obviously very excited" about bringing 21 Century Fox content to the new service once the acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets closes, but added that the company remained "incredibly supportive and enthusiastic" about theatrical distribution of movies. This, as Disney CEO Bob Iger noted, will be reflected in the price.

Disney just launched a $5-a-month (about Rs. 340-a-month) ESPN Plus streaming service with sports. Disney is hoping they can use their Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm libraries, along with NatGeo to build on an already extensive library of shows and movies from Disney.

What exactly all this means for the Marvel movies now on Netflix is a little unclear.

Launching the streaming services is Disney's biggest priority next year, Iger said. As Disney hasn't renewed its streaming deal with Netflix, though, Star Wars: Episode IX will hit the streaming service following its home release in 2020.

In the fiscal third quarter, Disney's net income rose 23 percent to $2.92 billion (around Rs. 20,000 crores), or $1.95 (about Rs. 133) per share, from $2.37 billion (roughly Rs. 16,300 crores), or $1.51 (around Rs. 104) per share, a year ago.

Elon Musk tweets he is taking Tesla private at $US420
He added that in the future, when Tesla reached a "phase of slower, more predictable growth", the firm could go public again. Mr Musk later brought some clarity to the situation in an email to Tesla employees that was also posted on Tesla's blog .

Shares of Disney, which have climbed almost 9 percent so far this year, slipped 1.1 percent in after-hours trading on Tuesday to $115.45. Disney's television networks also saw gains, including at ESPN, despite the higher National Basketball Association costs and lower advertising revenue.

Total revenue rose 7 percent to $15.23 billion, but missed analysts' average forecast of $15.34 billion.

That would put the series as one of the priciest TV shows around in a world of rapidly-spiralling TV production costs, as prestige dramas become grander in the age of peak TV.

So, while Disney is now working on projects meant specifically for the streaming service, including an adaption of the novel Stargirl, the streaming service will make sure that fans understand Star Wars films released prior to 2019 will be unavailable. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $116.56 (roughly Rs. 8,000), an increase of nearly 10 percent from a year ago.
