Thousands of people made homeless by a powerful quake on Indonesian resort islands looked for shelter Monday night as rescue workers continued to search for the missing and said the death toll of 98 would likely rise.

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead after a 6.9 magnitude natural disaster hit Indonesia's islands of Lombok and Bali on Sunday. A distraught Muhamad Juanda said on Tuesday that "people were praying in two rows; there are about 50 people in each row so a total of 100 people praying inside the mosque".

"We didn't know that it was an quake and just thought of it to be a very bad storm", Mulraney said, who arrived in Indonesia on July 29 for a holiday with her friend.

"So many people are trapped on the Gili Islands and Lombok, where only two weeks ago we were snorkelling and enjoying the lovely beaches".

Global charity Oxfam said drinking water was scarce because of a recent spell of extremely dry weather in Lombok.

Indonesian authorities are appealing for food, clean water and medical help for some 156,000 people forced from their homes and 1,477 severely injured in the disaster.

Nugroho said the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue crews reach more affected areas. "The affected areas have no electricity, and hospitals are over capacity".

"You're safe, mister", says one of the soldiers as emotion overcomes the man, clad in Islamic robes, and villagers crowd around him.

Montgomery-Lay said her family hasn't gone to the airport to try to get on a flight for fear of being stuck in the heat with her daughter's health condition.

Lombok is one of 10 new destinations, dubbed "the new Balis", that Indonesia is developing to help attain Widodo's ambitious target of boosting tourism revenues to 8% of GDP and attracting 20 million foreign tourists a year.

BNPB had previously put the number of dead at 105, including two on the western neighboring island of Bali, which also felt the 6.9 magnitude quake.

Oxfam's local project manager in Lombok, Meili Narti, said there needed to better coordination of aid efforts between the government and the military.

He also claimed water is "foolishly being diverted into the Pacific Ocean". "Can be used for fires, farming and everything else". Fire resources from across Dallas-Fort Worth will be heading to California to help crews combat the Mendocino Complex wildfire .

TRT World's Jack Hewson reports.

Videos showed screaming people running in panic from a shopping mall and a neighborhood in Bali where parked vehicles swayed.

"First we used our hands to clear the debris, then hammers, chisels and machines to slowly remove the pieces", said Mr Marcos Eric, a volunteer rescue worker from a mining company, after an ambulance took the woman away.

TRT World's Aishe Jamal has more.

Since last night, three earthquakes have hit Indonesia, where one was recorded at 5.0 magnitude.

What was supposed to be a bucket-list family trip after her daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer, turned into a harrowing tale of survival mode as a powerful quake hit Indonesia leaving the family stuck on a popular tourist island, said a British Columbia woman. "The lamp was shaking, and people were shouting 'Get out.' I ran out into the dark because the power cut off".

While the locals had been "terrific" in offering help, the couple were now cutting short their holiday.

A regional ministerial-level conference on counterterrorism that was set to be held in Mataram on Monday had been canceled following the quake.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, in Lombok for a regional security meeting, said he and his delegation were dining in their hotel's 12th-floor restaurant when the quake struck, plunging the building into darkness and throwing people to the floor.

Fortunately, they now have shelter at their hotel and Montgomery-Lay said they feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the support they've already received.

The Bali and Lombok airports continued operating on Sunday night, according to the director general of civil aviation.
