The Academy announces new changes to the Oscars, including popular film category

This is not the first time the AMPAS has altered their rules in an attempt to get more commercially popular films to the table at the Academy Awards.

The Oscars are adding a new category to honour popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020. The 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23.

Superhero films such as Black Panther are among those which could now stand a much better chance of being recognised during awards season.

However, the three-hour telecast means select categories will not air live.

The board of governors announced the changes in a letter to academy members after the board's Tuesday meeting.

Elon Musk tweets he is taking Tesla private at $US420
He added that in the future, when Tesla reached a "phase of slower, more predictable growth", the firm could go public again. Mr Musk later brought some clarity to the situation in an email to Tesla employees that was also posted on Tesla's blog .

The next Oscars air Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Details of the new category like eligibility requirements will be announced at a later date, but at first glance the new award category does seemed created to try to heighten interest in the telecast by potentially including box office hits with some critical acclaim, like the recent Black Panther, Logan and Avengers: Infinity War.

The legendarily lengthy Oscars telecast will also be shortened, which means certain awards will not be presented during the live broadcast - another major break with Academy Awards tradition. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process. Others will be presented during commercial breaks, with the winners' acceptances "edited and aired later in the broadcast".

This complaint has already spawned some changes to the Academy's annual ceremony, most notably a decision in 2009 to expand Best Picture nominees from five to 10 in part because one of 2008's most acclaimed films, The Dark Knight, was left out of the Best Picture category that year. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".

Popular film? What is this? The next ceremony will be the 91st Academy Awards.
